Times To Reconnect

Akagera National Park

The history behind Akagera NP is remarkable and intriguing. The area experienced a catastrophe in the 1994 genocide. African Park management has transformed the cancerous state to hope and wealth.

The park is a sanctuary for savannah-adapted species in the country. It is the largest conserved wetland in Central Africa. It used to be a grazing field for over 30K cattle. The government comes into agreement with the locals to generate income by introducing wildlife in the park.

Poaching activities were banned. Enforcement of rhino trackers, canine unit, and helicopter patrol help to protect the animals. Lions were the first beast to be introduced in the park, followed by black rhinos. It is a haven planet for wildlife, and the number has grown to over 13K over the years. Tourists can also see zebra, baboons, antelopes, giraffes, elephants, monkeys, and buffalo. The local people enjoy benefits from the park.

Traveling from Kigali airport, it takes approximately two hours to arrive at Akagera. The vegetation of the beautiful park comprises savannah, woodland, and marshes. The breathtaking scenery also has mountains and lakes.

The park is an amusement destination for bird watching. There are over 482 species, including the special prehistoric shoebill. For accommodation, you can stay in bush camps or lodges. You can access this place via vehicle. The boat safari is another fun activity in the Nile crocodile-infested waters. Hippos and waterfowl are abundant.
