The Maasai Mara, located in South-West Kenya, is among Africa’s most incredible wildlife sanctuaries. The reserve extends over a vast 1510km2 with an altitude of about 2170 meters. If you are wondering, the name Mara originated from the Maasai (Maa) language, which means “spotted.” The description perfectly fits the reserve as, looking from a distance, you sight animals, umbrella acacias bushes, and trees, spotting the extensive plain.
Maasai Mara is home to over 25 % of Kenya’s wildlife, including 570 bird species and 95 mammal species. On the Eastern side of the reserve, you will find the Ngama hills, which happens to be the favorite spot for the rhinos. The Oloololo escarpments demarcate the western border. The fun does not end there; once at the northern border, you find the Musira swamp. This is a picturesque place to sight the leopard, lion, elephant and cheetah.
Tanzania’s Serengeti National park also provides spectacular and diverse ecosystems. On the South East of the park, you find vast savanna. For rough terrain lovers, you get to the rocky and hilly northern part. Here you find captivating granite outcrops (kopjes) rising from the plains. Rivers, forests, and valleys are located to the West. Besides giving you an all-around landscape experience, the view is stunning. Here you get an incredible game viewing and breathtaking scenery. Four of the big 5, the cheetah, and predators such as the bat-eared fox, the hyena, and the jackal are also common sightings. However, only the black rhino is present in Serengeti. Temperatures here are not harsh- it is warm during the day but could be pretty chilly at night.
Combined, the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem offers a memorable experience. You get to see the famed Mara Triangle with your own eyes. Another captivating scenery is where the two rivers (Nyangores and Amala) from the Napuiya swamp in Kenya's highlands join to form the Mara river. The river, which flows through Serengeti and Maasai Mara, is credited with one of the ten scenic natural travel wonders of the word-the wildebeest migration.
